Actualité - Mexican Opposition Contends Electoral Decision
Mexico, Aug 29 (Prensa Latina) - Members of the Mexican opposition declared Tuesday that the magistrates lack legal grounds to resolve the 375 complaints concerning the Mexican presidential election, thus paving the way to impose governing party candidate Felipe Calderon.
Legal representatives and political experts of the opposition Por el Bien de Todos coalition faulted the lack of clarity in the release by Federal Electoral Tribunal (TEPJF) officials of the first results of the partial vote recount in 11,839 polling places.
The TEPJF reduced National Action Party candidate Felipe Calderon by 81,080 votes, while Por el Bien de Todos s Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was cut 76,897 votes.
This changed nothing and allows Calderon to keep his lead, according to judges and magistrates.
Horacio Duarte, coalition representative to the Federal Electoral Institute, said the 375 complaints were resolved rapidly, without explaining content of agreements or results of the recount of the 11,839 opened booths.
Duarte stated that the judges did not act openly because they did not inform about annulled votes or the impact of the results, triggering suspicion about their conduct and affecting credibility of an electoral body that must work with transparency.
Por el Bien de Todos said it considers the TEPJF a valid entity, irrespective of its ruling, but made it clear its support for the imposition of Calderon does not conform to the current situation.
Lopez Obrador has urged Mexicans not to recognize the TEPJF verdict, and to oppose Calderon as president of the Republic, and criticized magistrates for violating the Constitution and allowing a coup.
