Actualité - Al Zarqawi Death Murky
A very imprecise report with numerous gaps was given to press by the U.S. Central Command on June 8 concerning the death of Jordanian Abu Musab al Zarqawi in Baquba, Iraq.
U.S. Maj. Gen. William Caldwell said "Al Zarqawi is gone," while showing a photo of the dead man's face, the only photo used to prove his death.
According to the top U.S. military official, two precision 227 kg bombs were dropped in an area with a few houses in Baquba, capital of Diyala Province.
A videotape later showed the place where the U.S. air strike took place and showed two bomb explosions. Although the general said two F-16 war planes launched the bombs, the aircraft were not seen in the video.
The Command revealed that Iraqi police were the first to arrive to the destroyed area, followed by a group of soldiers from the 5th Infantry Division. Seven bodies were removed from the scene, including that of Al Zarqawi, whose fingerprints and a DNA sample were taken for tests, he continued.
After saying that the U.S. military operation was part of joint intelligence actions, supported by Jordan and extended for several days, Caldwell added that another 17 raids were also carried out against alleged insurgents the same day.
