Actualité - Chile Students Mobilize a Million
Santiago de Chile, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) - The so-called "penguins" went to the streets on Monday and mobilized almost a million people when the government and governmental sectors had bet the student organization was divided and exhausted.
Chilean high school students kept their pressure for major teaching changes with the support of a hundred social organizations and the joining of 87 percent of the population.
Their activities were concentrated on an internal forum, days of reflection or cultural acts to avoid being linked to the disturbances that marked the day in Santiago de Cuba and other cities: around 500 arrested and dozens of wounded people.
There were 300 000 university people who joined the 650 000 high school students all over the country. In the Chilean University around 100 000 students left the school, according to the student organization president Nicolas Grau.
The powerful teachers union joined students in an effective strike, constituting a strong demonstration, which forced the government to make important concessions on one of the main demands: the elimination of the Organic Constitutional and Teaching Law (LOCE).
That law was passed days before Pinochet was overturned in 1990, and reduces the State's role to a financial position in education, with the market regulating education.
