Actualité - Israeli Troops Infiltrate into Gaza, Shoot Reporters and Medics IOF Kill 8 Palestinians in West Bank, Gaza Strip in 24 Hours

Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) overnight Tuesday carried out the first Israeli military incursion deep into Gaza since August 2005, killed eight Palestinians during the last 24 hours, three of them extra-judicially, and attacked, shot and wounded reporters and medics while on routine duty in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.

An IOF undercover unit infiltrated about three kilometres into the coastal area of the northern Gaza Strip, backed by naval and helicopter support, ambushed a group of Palestinian anti-Israeli occupation activists, and engaged the group in a five-hour battle, killing three of them.

A member of the Force 17 presidential guard who rushed to the scene with medics for help was also killed.

An Israeli helicopter fired a missile at reporters who were covering the event and at the medics who rushed with two ambulances to the scene, wounding several of them.

The three activists killed were identified as the Islamic Jihad members Abdul-Rahman Abu Shanab, Yousef Abu Al Mi'za, and Mohammad Matar.

The two wounded reporters were identified as Mahmoud Al Bayidh, of the Ramatan News Agency, and Yahia Al Madhoun, of the Youth Radio.

An ambulance driver told the Qatar-based al-Jazeera Arabic TV that a missile hit the crowd of reporters and medics and other civilians who rushed for help.

Palestinian security officials told CBC News that the fierce fighting for about five hours between the activists and IOF's special forces erupted around midnight. Israeli troops were joined at one point by a naval diving unit, The battle ended just before dawn on Tuesday. IOF air force also sent helicopters to back the troops with missiles.

IOF confirmed that an Israeli helicopter attack was launched and an Israeli infantry unit had been engaged in combat with Islamic Jihad activists in the Al Atatra area near Beit Lahiya.

On Monday the IOF troops shot dead Palestinian man Abdel Moati Shukri, claiming he was armed and spotted suspiciously near the Gaza Strip Israeli security fence.

For the past two months, the IOF have been pounding the fields in northern Gaza Strip with 155mm artillery shells -- more than 5 100 since March 31, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

Separately in the northern West Bank, IOF troop extra-judicially killed three Palestinian anti-occupation activists in three separate raids overnight on Tuesday.

Hani al-Saqqa, 24, was killed in the Balata refugee camp near Nablus, and Tareq Ahmad Zakarneh, 24, killed in the village of Qabatiyeh near Jenin. A third activist was killed in the village of A’nabta.

Also on Tuesday the IOF demolished two Palestinian houses in the northern West Bank town of Salfit.

The Palestinian National Information Center (PNIC) reported on May 27 that the IOF killed seven Palestinians and injured 23 others in one week.

The IOF killed 39 Palestinian civilians since the beginning of 2006, according to B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights organization. B'Tselem also reported that 13 Israeli civilians were been killed by the Palestinian home-made rockets launched from Gaza since June 2004.
