Actualité - US Practices Risk Human Survival

Havana, Jun 16 (Prensa Latina) - Cuban Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Abelardo Moreno asserted environmental deterioration, wars and consumption policies by world powers such as the US are increasingly threatening the survival of humankind.

Abelardo Moreno made his remark at the 7th International Congress on Disasters closing at Havana´s Conventions Center on Friday.

Moreno assured the US government spends one billion dollars in its arm race while hunger grips poor nations and malnutrition kills millions of children a year, according to latest statistics from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

The US entitles itself to launch preventive wars on over 60 nations and downplays the huge challenges poised by abject poverty and inequalities in the world, he said.

The top official said he was not using apocalyptical terms and recalled President Fidel Castro has repeatedly warned of the seriousness and importance of the current world events.

He ratified the Cuban stance against war and other situations affecting human survival, and demanded nations, especially the US, to abide by international environment agreements.

Cuba not only strongly condemns any attempt by the US and its main allies to cause disasters, but also the blockades, unilateral sanctions and pressures exerted on the UN Security Councils, he contended.
