Havana, Apr 13 (Prensa Latina) - Social activists opposing the US-devised Free Trade Area for the Americas (FTAA) called it a virus making risky mutations to circumvent rising regional rejection.

More than 400 Latin American and European union, farmer, ombudsmen, and social networks, at the 5th Anti-FTAA Regional Meeting, in Havana until April 15, supported the warning by Osvaldo Martinez, director of Cuban Center of Research for the World Economy, that rather than dead, the US project has adopted different forms."

"It has mutated like a malignant tumor, retaining the core of the domination plot to obtain regional oil, gas, water, biodiversity, markets and the work force," stressed Martinez.

After the failed 2005 Summit of the Americas in Mar del Plata, Argentina, the FTAA is now camouflaged as "trade liberalization," in order to sack the region.

Yes, he insisted, the original version is frozen and that´s a victory, but the war is not won, nor is it time to put down our weapons.

He warned of the small bilateral and multilateral FTAAs that "concentrate neoliberal policies in small packages with the propaganda of free trade goodies."

But with a global economy in the hands of mostly US and European corporations practicing selective protectionism, free trade "is fiction", Martinez said.

"Free Trade is not free and has never been. It does not even honor the traditional concept of commerce and neither does its practice generate economic growth," he added.
