Actualité - Iran Rejects US Demand

Tehran, Jul 2 (Prensa Latina) - Iran rejected on Sunday a veiled US ultimatum, including a deadline of July 5, to respond to proposals made by the Big Five nuclear powers for the Persian country to give up its uranium enrichment program.

The Iranian reply will be presented from July 23 to Aug 22, Spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Hamid Reza Asefi said, in line with similar remarks made previously by President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.

The US demand is seen as part of the harsh US-Iran confrontation. Neither the European country members of the UN Security Council, nor China, have set any deadline for the Tehran response.

Asefi stressed that "a deadline is beyond discussion," and described the US remarks as "non-constructive, not leading to a solution of the issue."

The spokesman"s remarks suggest that Iran is ready to reach a negotiated solution to the nuclear standoff, but on its own terms, combined with proposals made by the Big Five, plus Germany.
