Actualité - World Solidarity for Cuban 5

Havana, Dec 12 (Prensa Latina) - A new world celebration of solidarity demanding the immediately release of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unfairly imprisoned for eight years in the US starts Tuesday on the island and in other countries.

The celebration, slated until December 27, coincides with the five year anniversary of the manipulated trial imposed on Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez and Rene Gonzalez, who received unfair sentences running from 15 years to double life terms.

In his defense on December 12, 2001, Gerardo Hernandez expressed that Cuba was preventing realization of violent plans by counterrevolutionary groups settled in the US.

In the last 48 years, actions of that kind have taken over 3,000 Cuban lives.

"Cuba has the right to defend itself from those terrorist actions prepared in Florida with total impunity," said Hernandez in his testimony.

This world celebration of solidarity for the release of the Cuban Five, justice and against terrorism was recently convened by Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon during an international colloquium on this issue held here.

"We want to break the silence," stated Alarcon alluding to eight years of the trial being absent from the US mass media.

The United States designates the Cuban Five as spies, while they were only defending their country from violent actions by anti-Cuban terrorist groups settled in that northern nation.
