Actualité - Chileans to Honor Salvador Allende

Santiago, Chile, Dec 11 (Prensa Latina) - Chilean popular organizations requested a permit to honor late President Salvador Allende at La Moneda Palace Monday before ex Dictator Augusto Pinochet is cremated.

The AFFD, Families of the Detained-Disappeared, convened a rally today at downtown Plaza Italia, while the Communist Party (PCCh) made a similar request to meet at the Allende Memorial.

The AFDD had reported that after honoring their loved ones at the Memorial for the Detained-Disappeared in the General Cemetery, they would march to Plaza Italia, origin of Sunday's huge demonstrations.

The director of PCCh met today with Interior Vice Minister Felipe Harboe to protest the repression against Sunday's attempts to march toward the statue of Allende when Pinochet's death was announced.

In letter to Harboe, the PCCh called on the government to guarantee free access to the Salvador Allende Monument without repression.

The Manuel Rodriguez Patriotic Front (FPMR) joined the Chilean people and world's general joy over the death of the assassin that led one of the bloodiest dictatorships on the continent.

The FPMR communiqué rejects every homage to the assassin, even military, for that would be almost a state funeral, or any attempt to "humanize this figure."

Meanwhile President Michelle Bachelet urged for calm and thoughts of reconciliation to achieve “justice, dialogue and true re-encounter among us.”
