Actualité - US Stomps into Somali Conflict

Luanda, Jan 9 (Prensa Latina) - A second US air raid on areas in southern Somali Tuesday marks a substantial increase in Washington intervention in an internal conflict from which it had earlier remained aloof.

The attack killed 30 people of unknown affiliation and considerably damaged crops and flocks, according to witnesses quoted by local press.

US sources said the targets were members of Al Qaeda accused of the 1998 attacks against the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

The US missiles hit the village of Hayo, the fourth civilian locality targeted, after Elnadow, Hayow, and Kudha, hit in the first phase that lasted almost all day.

The intervention of US forces in Somalia has further worsened the crisis in that country, after the Ethiopian military moved the Islamic Courts Union from Mogadishu late in December.
