United Nations, Jul 30 - (Prensa Latina) The UN Security Council rushes to sessions Sunday to assess the situation in Lebanon amid the international outcry for the Israeli assassination of other 57 civilians.

The meeting was urgently convened by Secretary General Kofi Annan, according to the press service at UN.

Annan´s Representative to Lebanon Geir Petersen expressed his profound dismay and sorrow for the death of civilians, the last of them Sunday and most women and children in the southern Lebanese city of Cana.

With the pretext to hunt members of Hezbollah, Israel warplanes pounded a refuge in Cana and destroyed various buildings, massacring 57 people including 25 children, as put by Health Minister Mohamed Jalife.

Such massacre triggered a strong response from the international community, and even made US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called for a cease-fire she had opposed until now.

In the name of God, Pope Benedict XVI has urged the people responsible for the spate of violence to lay down arms, without drawing a line between Israel, armed and backed by the US, and the Lebanese resistance.

Nothing justifies this attack, stated Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy in a message to Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Sinoria.

Irrespective of the world condemnation, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert asserted his Army will not cease attacks until Hezbollah is eliminated.

With a similar pretext, an attack slain 105 civilians in Cana in 1998; only an intensive international campaign forced Israel to stop that massacre.

The over two-week Israeli attacks on Lebanon, fully supported by the government of US President George W Bush, have murdered more than 600 people and have forced hundreds of others to flee to other zones.
