Actualité - Over a Million Lebanese Abandon their Homes
Geneva/Beirut, July 18 - More than a million people have abandoned their homes and "Beirut and the south of Lebanon are practically empty," said UN spokesperson Marie Heuze, who warned Tuesday that the figure would increase if the Israeli attacks continue.
Beirut, a city of 1.8 million inhabitants, has for several days been rocked by Israeli bombings launched by air and sea.
As the Lebanese flee their homes the evacuation of foreigners from Lebanon is also gaining momentum as thousands of Spanish, French, Germans, Russians and others leave by sea or road to escape the bombings.
The vast majority of the 25,000 Australians living in Lebanon, with double nationality, have no intention of leaving the country and only 700 are planning to leave.
In Tehran, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tuesday that the objective of the Israeli assault on Lebanon is to create conditions for a US occupation of the country, reported EFE.
Speaking at a meeting of the Student Parliament in Tehran, Ahmadinejad said the United States wants to occupy Lebanon, "after seeing its attempts to pressure us over the nuclear issue fail and after surrounding us from Iraq and Afghanistan."
Meanwhile, US President George W. Bush continues to justify the Israeli genocide against Lebanon, giving tacit support to the Israeli bombings of the capital and other regions of the Arab country.
