Actualité - Post to US: Immigrants are People

Washington, July 6 (Prensa Latina) The influential Washington Post called on the US Government Friday to improve conditions in illegal immigrant detention centers, where inspectors found rat infestations and irregular medical care, among other deficiencies.

In its editorial, the newspaper also denounces that undocumented aliens have limited access to legal services and are given uncooked food.

According to the Post, ICE - the Immigration and Customs Enforcement - should implement regulations to secure humanitarian treatment to all illegal immigrants under its jurisdiction in detention centers.

It is imperative to improve conditions in which thousands of men and women accused of violating immigration regulations are held, the daily asserted.

At least 62 illegal immigrants died in detention centers between 2004 and 2006, according to ICE figures, and the American Civil Liberties Union reports that several deaths in those prisons were caused by medical negligence.
