Actualité - US Should Revamp its Antiquated Cuba Policy
Washington, July 7 — New York Daily News columnist Albor Ruiz called Friday on the US to put an end to its blockade against Cuba and suggests that Washington leave the island nation to decide its own political destiny.
The United States must allow Cuba to decide its own future, the journalist states in his column where he criticizes the most recent plans of the Bush administration against Cuba, reported Prensa Latina news agency.
Ruiz comments that incapable of solving its big problems in Iraq, the US tries to make people believe that it has everything foreseen in relation to the Caribbean nation.
A fact is, the editorial underscores, that US policy against Havana has a half-century record of failures and of being held hostage to the ultra rightwing Cuban-American groups mostly based in Florida.
According to Ruiz, the Bush Administration should abandon its cold war mentality, promote free trade and travel between the two nations, and suspend the blockade.
He further recommends that Washington discard the interventionist proposals and counterproductive [State Department] reports, and once and for all develop a fair and respectful strategy towards Cuba.
The Bush administration- the article concludes- should remember the lesson: forced notions of democracy cannot be imposed using foreign intervention in the internal affairs of independent nations.
