United Nations, Aug 20 (Prensa Latina) - UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Saturday accused Israel of breaking the ceasefire in Lebanon, in an open violation of a resolution recently approved by the UN Security Council.

"The Secretary-General is deeply concerned about a violation by the Israeli side of the cessation of hostilities," said Annan in a statement issued by spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

"All such violations of Security Council resolution 1701 endanger the fragile calm that was reached after much negotiation," he added.

"The incident involved an Israeli attack on eastern Lebanon on Saturday," pointed out Dujarric, adding that there have also been several air violations by Israeli military aircraft, according to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

"All such violations of Security Council Resolution 1701 endanger the fragile calm that was reached after much negotiation," according to the communiqué.
