Actualité - Cuba Descries No Development Progress
During the debate on sustainable development, Agenda 21, representative Llanio Gonzalez said that it is four years since the World Sustainable Development Summit, and the economic, social, environmental, and ecological world situation is still critical.
The diplomat pointed out that the developing countries are the most affected by that situation, a consequence of a globalized economy.
He said the lack of financial resources, technology transfer and creation of capacity are the principal challenges and limitations of developing countries and that there has been "a drastic tendency to decrease" financial resources from developed countries as agreed in chapter 33 of Agenda 21.
The Cuban representative pointed out that the environment is contaminated and continues deteriorating, water for human consumption is scarce, and nonrenewable vital resources are being used up, while frequent and intense natural disasters threaten the very existence of many nations.
In conclusion, the Cuban representative asserted that nature and human beings themselves are at risk of disappearing and their preservation is a task for all the inhabitants of this planet, without distinction between rich and poor.
